CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Orange team grabbed Game 1 of the 2017 Orange & Blue World Series with a 3-2 triumph Thursday afternoon at Davenport Field. Jake McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) hit a two-run single and drove in all three of the Orange’s runs.

Orange starter Blake Rohm (Fr., Superior, Colo.) earned the win after allowing a run and two hits in 3 2/3 innings, while reliever Andrew Abbott (Fr., Halifax, Va.) worked out a ninth-inning jam to claim the save. Blue starter Robb Adams (Fr., Arcadia, Fla.) pitched four strong innings and allowed just two runs and two hits in taking the loss.

The Blue jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI single from Alex Tappen (Fr., Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), but McCarthy hit a two-out, two-run single to right in the third and later added a sac fly in the sixth inning.

The Blue made things interesting in the ninth inning against Abbott. After two were out, Cayman Richardson (So., Mechanicsville, Va.) doubled and scored on a Caleb Knight (Sr., Checotah, Okla.) single. After back-to-back walks on 3-2 pitches, Abbott recorded a strike out to end the game and leave the bases loaded.

Game 2 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday. The seven games will be broken up into two three-game series (Games 1-3 and Games 4-6 are separate series) as well as a stand-alone Game 7. If a given team wins the first two games of either series, the third game of that series will be played based on run differential of the first two games to allow the trailing team a chance to still win the series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running up the score.
