Virginia Splits Season Opener with Dickinson

Carlisle, Pa.- The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams split their season opener against Dickinson on Saturday (Nov. 4) in Carlisle, Pa. at the Kline Squash Center. The No. 13 Cavalier women defeated No. 23 Dickinson, 8-1, while the No. 17 Cavalier men fell to the No. 22 Red Devils, 7-2.
“A great start to the season for the women, notching a solid 8-1 win,” head coach Mark Allen said. “The men came out nervously, which is often the case in the first game of the season, but a few of them seemed to settle as the match progressed. We know a 7-2 loss is not a reflection of our current level and we will be looking to bounce back with a positive performance against Franklin & Marshall. Traditionally, our team has always responded really well to a disappointing loss and I am hoping that will be the case again tomorrow.”
The Virginia women’s team swept eight matches against the Red Devils, starting with wins from senior Carey Danforth (Greenwich, Conn.) and junior Molly Prockop (Groton, Mass.). Danforth defeated Jaime-Leigh Edghill on court four, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5, while Prockop defeated Abbie Wingerd on court eight, 11-4, 11-8, 11-2.
Sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass) recorded the next two wins for the Cavaliers, respectively. Doss won court six against Aya Sobhy, 11-1, 11-4, 11-2, while Woodworth defeated Domenica Romo on court two, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4.
Sophomore Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) and senior Isabel Stack (Millbrook, N.Y.) notched 3-0 wins on courts seven and nine, respectively, with Carroll downing Carley Barton, 11-5, 11-1, 11-3, and Stack downing Alanis Perez 11-0, 11-4, 11-5.
Dickinson got on the board with a win on court one as Hedvika Suchankova defeated sophomore Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) 4-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4, but the Cavaliers responded winning the last two matches.
Junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) defeated Nicole DeLuca on court five, 11-4, 11-1, 11-7, and sophomore Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa) defeated Eloise Nimoityn on court three, 11-5, 11-4, 11-1.
On the men’s side, Dickinson jumped out to a 2-0 start with Vincent Warzecha recording the first point for the Red Devils with a win over freshman David Brenman (Philadelphia, Pa.) on court eight.
Junior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) put the Cavaliers on the board with a win against Frank Goossens on court four, 11-9, 13-11, 9-11, 11-5, but Dickinson notched wins on the next four courts.
Virginia’s last point came from junior Grayson Budrosky (New Canaan, Conn.). Bubrosky defeated Cory Litman on court five, 12-10, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, before the Red Devils clinched the last match on court three.
The Cavaliers will be back in action tomorrow. The teams will play Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa., at the Mayser Squash Courts.
