CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 13 Virginia women’s squash team fell, 9-0, to No. 5 Stanford on Friday (Nov. 17) in the team’s home opener at the McArthur Squash Center in Charlottesville, Va.

“I was very happy with the team’s all-around performance this evening,” head coach Mark Allen said. “We were playing against the number five team in the country- a team that will challenge to win the national championship this year- and not one of our players looked like they didn’t belong on the court with their opponent. We played Stanford last year and were on the end of a much quicker loss. So, to extend them in the matches, the way that we did tonight, was a demonstration of how far we have come. Based on this performance, I believe this UVA team has a genuine shot at a top 10 finish this season.”

The match began with Stanford recording wins in positions three and nine, for a 2-0 start. Sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) battled Christina Huchro through four games in position six, suffering an 8-11, 11-1, 11-4, 11-2 loss.

Stanford followed with three-game wins in positions eight and two, respectively, before junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) forced a four-game match in position five. Tyson suffered an 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-2 loss to Sumrin Mudgil.

Additionally, sophomores Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) and Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) forced a game into a tie-break. Arya fell 12-10, 11-8, 11-6 in position one, while Thompson fell 13-11, 11-3, 11-7 in position two.

The Cavaliers will be back in action tomorrow as the No. 17 men’s team and the Virginia women host Penn at the McArthur Squash Center. The women’s match against the No. 2 Quakers will begin at noon, followed by the men’s match against No. 5 Penn at 2 p.m.
