Virginia Falls to Penn at Home

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams fell to Penn on Saturday (Nov. 18) at the McArthur Squash Center in Charlottesville, Va. The No. 13 Cavalier women (2-2) lost to the No. 2 Quakers (3-0), 8-1, while the No. 17 Virginia men’s team (1-2) fell to No. 5 Penn (3-0), 9-0.
“There was a great atmosphere in McArthur Squash Center today with plenty of people turning out to see both the men’s and women’s teams play,” head coach Mark Allen said. “The women’s team backed up a good performance last night with an even better one today. Though the women went down 8-1, there were career-best performances from several of our players.
“The men followed from where the women left off, and can also feel proud of their performance today. In particular, the top three matches, that were all played on the glass show court, were very competitive with Odrich, Hansford and Blake putting up a tremendous fight in front of a packed house. Freshman Matthew Katz also played some very inspired squash and wasn’t far off of a win today at position five.”
In the women’s match, the Cavaliers’ lone point came from a retired match in the second position. Sophomore Julia Thompson (Newton Square, Pa.) played Marie Stephan through one game before an injury forced Stephan to retire.
Sophomore Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.), junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) and senior Carey Danforth (Greenwich, Conn.), respectively, forced a fourth game in their matches. Carroll fell 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9 in position eight. Tyson’s fifth-position match had two games go into tie-breaks as she fell 10-12, 11-6, 14-12, 11-5. Danforth concluded the match with an 11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-4 loss in position four.
On the men’s side, junior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.), freshman Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Mason Blake (Philadelphia, Pa.) competed in four-game matches, respectively. Odrich’s third-position match had three games go into tie-breaks, falling 10-12, 12-10, 12-10, 11-9. Katz suffered an 11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 11-4 loss in position six, while Blake battled through the last match of the day, suffering an 11-7, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7 loss for position one.
The Cavalier men will return to action tomorrow hosting Gettysburg at 11 a.m., Richmond at 1:30 p.m. and North Carolina at 4 p.m. at the McArthur Squash Center in Charlottesville. The women’s team will play on Nov. 28 against George Washington at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts in Washington.
