PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The No. 16 Virginia men’s squash team defeated No. 13 Brown, 5-4, recording the last two points of the match, on Friday (Jan. 26) at the Brodsky Memorial Squash Pavilion in Providence, R.I. The No. 16 Cavalier women’s team suffered a 6-3 loss to the No. 12 Bears.

“Last season, our women fell to Brown by a score of 9-0 and our men fell by a 1-8 margin,” said head coach Mark Allen. “So today shows just how much progress we have made in a year. The men did a tremendous job of holding their composure after going out to a big lead, then seeing Brown come storming back. It is a credit to their mental toughness that this is their third 5-4 win. I would give additional honors to Killian Bubrosky, who has now scored the deciding point for us in two of those matches. He iced the wins, both times, knowing the whole outcome depended upon him. As with the Drexel match, our women were right on the verge of upsetting a very strong team and showed great resolve, which will serve us well for the remaining matches this weekend.”

Sophomore Harrison Kapp (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded the first point of the men’s match, winning in position nine against Palak Goel, 8-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5, before junior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated Andrew Wei in position three, 3-11, 11-6, 15-13, 11-5. The Bears captured a win in position six, but freshman William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) defeated Nicholas Pitaro in position five, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5.

Brown recorded a one-point match lead, 4-3, after winning positions two, eight, and four, respectively. However, senior Mason Blake (Philadelphia, Pa.) won in position one against Thomas Belcher 11-4, 10-12, 11-8, 11-5, before junior Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) captured the match win with an 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 victory in position seven against Thomas Walker.

In the women’s match, sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) recorded the team’s first point, topping position six against Hannah Safford 11-9, 11-8, 11-9. Sophomore Isabelle Ezratty (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated Katherine Pisani, 6-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6, in position nine, while freshman Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) won against Lauren Kotin in position eight, 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.

The Cavaliers will return to action tomorrow. The men’s team will compete against No. 22 MIT at the Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center in Cambridge, Mass., at 11 a.m. before both Cavalier teams play Middlebury at the Murr Center in Boston, Mass. The women’s match against No. 13 Middlebury will begin at 3 p.m., followed by the men’s match against the No. 21 Panthers at 4:30 p.m.
