Virginia Sweeps Middlebury, Men Defeat MIT

BOSTON- The No. 16 Virginia men’s squash team (8-6) opened the day on Saturday (Jan. 27) with a 7-2 win against No. 22 MIT (14-14) at the Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center in Cambridge, Mass., before the No. 16 Cavalier women’s team (5-8) defeated No. 13 Middlebury (8-5), 8-1, and the UVA men’s team defeated the No. 21 Panthers (5-7), 5-4, at the Murr Center in Boston, Mass.
“We took a pair of signature wins today against Middlebury,” head coach Mark Allen said. “The men’s team picked up right where we left off last night after that win over Brown, prevailing over MIT then rolling our momentum forward against the Panthers in the afternoon. Our men responded incredibly well to the pressure and I was impressed with how, during each of our matches thus far this weekend, so many of the guys have been stepping up to deliver some of their finest performances of the season. This was the women’s best win to date and the result will certainly help us move up to where we hope to be in the rankings ahead of nationals. The 8-1 scoreline does not show how hard fought of a match it truly was. The women really put together their best play of the season against strong competition. Tomorrow is another huge day for us and we are looking forward to facing Williams and Wesleyan to close out our weekend here in Boston.”
In the men’s match against MIT, five matches recorded extra games as the Cavaliers battled for wins from sophomore Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.), who defeated Vedaant Kukadia 13-11, 7-11, 11-13, 11-5, 11-8 in position two, and junior Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.), who won against Neel Dass 8-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-4 in position seven. Freshman William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) captured the win against Jeffry Hu in position five, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5.
Senior Mason Blake (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.), freshman Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Harrison Kapp (Philadelphia, Pa.) won in three games in positions one, four, eight and nine, respectively.
In the men’s second matchup of the day against Middlebury, Grayson Bubrosky captured a 13-11, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10 win against Henry Pearson in position four as William Braff defeated Wiatt Hinton 11-8, 11-13, 11-7, 11-6 in position five. Freshman Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) topped position nine against William Kurth 11-8, 1-11, 11-5, 11-8. Junior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) in position three and Katz in position seven recorded 3-0 victories in their matches.
The Cavaliers dropped just one match in the women’s game against Middlebury. Freshman Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) won against Beatrijs Kuipers, 8-11, 10-12, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6 in position one, while sophomore Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) defeated Alexa Comai, 4-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-8, in position three and junior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) defeated Natasha Lowitt 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 18-16, 11-7 in position seven.
The Cavaliers swept their remaining five women’s matches in three sets.
Virginia will return to action tomorrow as the men’s team plays Williams College at 10 a.m., while the women’s’ team Williams at 12:30 p.m. and Wesleyan at 3 p.m. All three matches will be played at the Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center in Cambridge, Mass.
