The Cavaliers Sweep Sunday Matches

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams swept their matches on Sunday (Jan. 28) at the Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center in Cambridge, Mass. The No. 16 Virginia men’s team defeated No. 19 Williams, 7-2, while the No. 16 Cavalier women defeated No. 11 Williams, 5-4, and No. 21 Wesleyan, 8-1.

“On our final day of a crucial weekend, our players stood and delivered another set of excellent performances,” head coach Mark Allen said. “It was hard to top the way the men finished against Middlebury yesterday, but the women found a way to do so in an amazing match against Williams. Every one of our players put in their best effort to bring us the win and Tara (Arya) really came through when we needed her to at the end of the match– our second 5-4, down to the wire victory over Williams in as many meetings.

“Our men also rounded out an incredible set of results with a resounding win against Williams’ men. A 7-2 margin against that squad is a credit to how sharp they played, in their fourth of four very tough matches. Three players, Sarah Doss for the women and William Braff and Harrison Kapp for the men, went undefeated on the weekend, and all three embodied the strength and tenacity of the program. I can’t say how proud I am of the way we competed and represented the University this weekend in every phase.”

In the men’s match against Williams, freshmen William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) and Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) won positions five and eight, respectively, in four games. Braff recorded an 11-4, 11-8, 12-14, 11-4 score against Ben Eisenberg, while Katz defeated Will Ruggiero 11-9, 11-2, 6-11, 14-12.

The Cavaliers rounded out the competition with juniors Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.), Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.), Henry Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) and Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) winning in three games at positions three, four, five, and seven, respectively, while sophomore Harrison Kapp (Philadelphia) topped position nine.

The women’s team opened the day, edging Williams with a win from sophomore Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.). Arya defeated Esther Baek, 8-11, 11-3, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, in position five to give the Cavaliers their fifth point of the match.

Senior Carey Danforth (Greenwich, Conn.) won position two in five games, defeating Hayley Parsons 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 13-11, while junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) and sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) won positions four and six, respectively, in four games. Tyson defeated Ananya Mahalingam-Dhingra 11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7 as Doss defeated Sarah Willwerth 11-5, 9-11, 115, 14-12. Junior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) won in three sets at position seven against Abigail LeBlanc, 13-11, 11-8, 11-8.

The women’s team concluded the day with a win against Wesleyan. The Cavaliers swept seven individual matches with Arya blanking Natasha Feenstra in position five, 11-0, 11-0, 11-0. Danforth tallied the team’s remaining point with a win in position two against Aditi Prasad, 6-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-9, 11-5.

Virginia will host the UVA Round Robin Invitational, with matches beginning on February 3, at the McArthur Squash Center in Charlottesville, Va.
