Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia women’s golf team opens the spring portion of its schedule this weekend at the sixth annual Florida State Match-Up Tournament at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course and Club in Tallahassee, Feb. 9-10.
Because of inclement weather, the tournament has been altered to two days. Friday’s play will include 36 holes and 18 holes will be contested Saturday.
The event is the most unique tournament in all of college golf as the 12 teams and 66 individuals play in pairs for a Match-Up championship, a team championship and an individual title.
When the invitations were sent out, six teams were initially invited to Tallahassee to play in the event. Those six teams were then able to contact a team of their choice to partner with for the tournament. The team partnerships consist of head coaches partnering up with their former assistant coaches who are now coaching their own programs, former college teammates, rivals, friends, and teams that have fun together. The goal of the tournament is to get the spring season kicked off with some fun and friendly competition.
The 12 teams will tee off in twosomes for the first two rounds and then in a final round shotgun in threesomes. The twosomes will consist of the partner teams playing together and for this year the partners are as follows: Florida State/Texas A&M, South Carolina/Virginia, Missouri/Coastal Carolina, Columbia/Princeton, Notre Dame/Kentucky, and Minnesota/Michigan State.
The match-up portion of the tournament will be determined by taking the best four scores from the partners (which is a total of 10 players) and the worst score to make the match up total. At the end of the tournament, the teams with the lowest score will win the match up. There will also be an individual champion along with a team champion crowned.
The Virginia lineup includes Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz), Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas), Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.). Ju Hee Bae (Chantilly, Va.) and Lyndsey Hunnell (Troutville, Va.) will compete as individuals.
Last year the Cavaliers finished eighth in the field at 24-over 888. Maho Hayakawa led UVA with a 13th-place finish at even par 216. Florida State took the team title at 837 while South Carolina was second at 847.
