BOSTON – The No. 14 Virginia women’s squash team fell to No 11. Williams, 5-4, in the first round of the Kurtz Cup on Friday (Feb. 16) at the Murr Center in Boston.

“That’s the third 5-4 with Williams in a row,” head coach Mark Allen said. “This time though they (Williams) pulled out the last match to move into the semi-finals. However, we fought hard and can feel proud of our performance despite the loss. We will be looking to bounce back tomorrow.”

The Cavaliers captured the first three points of the match, to record an early 3-0 lead. Junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) recorded the team’s first point with a win in position six against Sarah Willwerth. Sophomore Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) followed with a win against Julia Ward in position three, while freshman Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) defeated Caroline Hogan in position nine.

Williams captured its first point with a win in position two, but sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) added Virginia’s fourth point of the match, defeating Ananya Mahalingam-Dhingra in position five.

The Ephs won positions eight and one, respectively, before winning position seven to tie the match at 4-4.

Sophomore Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) forced a fifth game in position four. She fell to Esther Baek- who captured the deciding point.

Virginia will face No. 15 Middlebury in the consolation bracket tomorrow. The match will begin at 4 p.m.
