Virginia Defeats Middlebury in Kurtz Cup

BOSTON – The No. 14 Virginia women’s squash team (13-9) defeated No. 15 Middlebury (11-10), 7-2, in the Kurtz Cup on Saturday (Feb. 17) at the Murr Center in Boston.

“One of the most telling tests of a team is how well they recover from disappointing losses,” head coach Mark Allen said. “We certainly experienced a very emotionally, draining loss against Williams yesterday. But the way we performed today against Middlebury says a great deal about how mentally resilient and tough this squad is. I am very proud of the way we responded today and know that we are ready to face another strong opponent in GW in the consolation finals.”

Middlebury recorded the first point of the match with a win in position two, but sophomore Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa) responded for the Cavaliers with an 11-5, 11-5, 11-9 win in position three against Alexa Comai.

Junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) and sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) won in positions six and five, respectively. Tyson defeated Virginia Schaus, 11-7, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, while Doss topped Natalie Madden 11-3, 11-5, 11-7. Freshman Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) followed with a win against Lucy Bostwick in position two, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9.

Sophomore Isabelle Ezratty (Greenwich, Conn.) battled to win in five games, after dropping the first two sets to Mira Chugh. Ezratty captured the match point in position eight, winning 12-14, 5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-9.

Sophomore Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) and junior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) recorded the team’s last two points, winning in positions four and seven, respectively. Arya defeated Anne Glassie 11-8, 11-8, 11-6, while Mayhew topped Emily Beinkampen 12-10, 11-7, 11-7.

The Cavaliers will play No. 12 George Washington in the consolation finals tomorrow at 3 p.m.
