BOSTON –The No. 14 Virginia women’s squash team (14-9) defeated No. 12 George Washington (9-10), 7-2, in the consolation finals of the Kurtz Cup, the B division of the College Squash Association’s National Championships, on Sunday (Feb. 18) at the Murr Center in Boston. With the win, the Cavaliers finished fifth overall in the Kurtz Cup.

Virginia recorded an early 3-0 lead in the match as sophomore Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) captured the team’s first point with an 11-3, 15-13, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8 win in position four against Mary Jo Mahfood. Freshman Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) topped Haley Hunt, 11-3, 11-7, 12-10, in position nine before sophomore Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) defeated Abigail Shonrock, 11-4, 11-5, 9-11, 11-5, in position three.

George Washington captured a win in position two, but Virginia answered with a win from sophomore Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.). Doss defeated Emma Tryon in position five, recording a score of 11-9, 13-11, 11-5.

Junior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.), junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) and sophomore Isabelle Ezratty (Greenwich, Conn.), respectively, captured the remaining three points for the Cavaliers. Mayhew defeated Brooke Feldman in position seven, 11-8, 11-6, 11-0, while Tyson won position six, 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-7, against Zuha Nazir. Ezratty won position eight against Ginger Sands, 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6.

The match concludes the season for the women’s team. The Cavalier men will compete in CSA National Championships beginning Friday (Feb. 23) in Hartford, Conn.
