PISCATAWAY, N.J. –
Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swim teams completed the opening day of the ECAC Championships on Friday (Feb. 23) at Rutger’s Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.

“While our guys are doing work at the ACC Championships, we have a crew up at the ECACs also bringing the heat,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “Peyton Baldwin and Henry Keel leading the way with lifetime bests in the 500 free and the 50 free, respectively. Looking forward to watching their progress throughout the rest of the competition.”

Junior Mary Pelton (Townson, Md.) paced the team with a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, recording a time of 2:01.20. In the preliminary race, she swam a time of 1:59.82 to earn an NCAA B Standard mark in the event.

Sophomores Jason Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Henry Keel (Memphis, Tenn.) captured NCAA B Standard marks in their respective events. Quinn recorded a time of 4:24.17 in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing third in the event. Keel swam a time of 20.13 in the 50-yard freestyle to place third overall.

Junior Peyton Baldwin (Newport News, Va.) and Jessie Gvozdas finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s 500-yard freestyle. Baldwin recorded a career-best time of 4:52.12, while Gvozdas swam a time of 4:52.31.

Junior Brandon Goldstein (Gaithersburg, Md.) placed second in the men’s 200-yard medley with a time of 1:49.40.

The Cavalier women’s team is tied for ninth in the team standings with 53 points, while the men’s team ranks 10th with 49 points.

Virginia will return for day two of the ECAC Championships tomorrow. Preliminary races will begin at 10 a.m.
