HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 14 Virginia men’s squash team (15-7) defeated No. 15 Cornell (6-14) 5-4 in the second round of the Hoehn Cup on Saturday (Feb. 24) at the Kellner Squash Courts.

“The guys fought hard and came away with a great win today,” head coach Mark Allen said. “There were several very gutsy performances, including Killian (Bubrosky) coming back from 2-0 down, and captain Mason Blake holding his nerve to take a tight fifth game and give us the overall win. One more match to play against Drexel, who beat us 5-4 earlier in the season. It should be another good one and we hope to finish strong.”

Sophomore Harrison Kapp (Philadelphia, Pa.) captured the team’s first point with an 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 win in position nine against James Paolella, while sophomore Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) recorded the team’s second point, defeating Alex Jung in position six, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5.

Cornell recorded a narrow lead with back-to-back wins in position two and five, respectively; however, junior Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) tied the match at 3-3 with a five-game victory in position eight. Killian Bubrosky defeated Jared Scherl 10-12, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.

Virginia captured the next two positions to secure the team victory with wins from junior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) in position four and senior Mason Blake (Philadelphia, Pa.) in position one, respectively. Grayson Bubrosky topped Illia Presman 11-7, 14-12, 11-6, while Blake went 5-11, 11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9 against Andrew Muran.

The Cavaliers will play in the consolation finals against No. 12 Drexel (8-11) tomorrow at Loomis Chaffee School. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
