HARTFORD, Conn. –
The No. 14 Virginia men’s squash team (15-8) fell, 5-4, in the consolation finals of the Hoehn Cup on Sunday (Feb. 25) to No. 12 Drexel (9-11) at the Loomis Chaffee School. The Cavaliers finished sixth in the B Division of the College Squash Association’s National Championships.

“We fought so hard today and were a whisker away from taking the match,” head coach Mark Allen said. “The men have had a great season, and have pulled out some huge wins beating several teams for the first time ever to give us a well-deserved, season-ending ranking of 14, four places higher than last year. Special mention to our two captains Mason Blake and Maxwell Novick whose leadership qualities have been one of the biggest reasons for this success. They will be very missed next year by their coaches and their teammates, and have been great representatives of our squash program in this first year of being a varsity team.”

Despite dropping position three, the Cavaliers captured a 2-1 lead with wins from sophomore Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) and freshman Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) in positions six and nine, respectively. Hansford defeated Noel Solomon 11-13, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8, while Andrew Braff defeated Royston Raymond 11-5, 11-6, 11-7.

Junior Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) won in position eight against Cillian Dunne 11-3, 12-10, 11-5 to even the match at 3-3, after the Dragons had topped positions two and five, respectively.

Drexel secured a 3-0 win in positions one, but freshman Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) forced a 4-4 tie, defeating Josh Hughes in position seven, 11-9, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6.

Junior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) battled through a 3-1 loss to Dylan Kachur in position four, who clinched the fifth point for the Dragons. Three of four games went into a tiebreak as Grayson Bubrosky fell 12-10, 11-13, 16-14, 11-5.

The match concludes the Cavaliers’ season. Virginia will await selection for the 2018 Individual Championships March 2-4 in D.C.
