Virginia Has Three Named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s lacrosse had three players selected to the 2018 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, the organization announced on Thursday (March 1).
Senior midfielder Kasey Behr (Northport, N.Y.), junior midfielder Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) and senior goalkeeper Rachel Vander Kolk (Severna Park, Md.) were each named to the list. Serving as team captains, the three have helped lead UVA to its best start since 2009 with a 4-0 record so far in 2018.
Behr, a 2017 watch list selection, was named a third team IWLCA All-American in 2017 after scoring 33 goals and adding 39 draw controls, 34 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. In 2018, Behr has stepped into the leadership role as a co-captain. She leads the Cavaliers with 13 goals. Behr has notched a hat trick in all four games for UVA.
Jackson was named a 2017 IWLCA Second Team All-American and All-ACC First Team selection after leading UVA with 74 points, 57 ground balls, 71 draw controls and 33 caused turnovers. She is tied for second for the Cavaliers with 14 points on eight goals and a team-high six assists. Jackson also has 12 ground balls and 12 draw controls.
Vander Kolk is the anchor of UVA’s defense that has allowed just 6.12 goals against in UVA’s first four games of 2018. Vander Kolk, the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2015 a IWLCA All-Region selection in 2016, has 30 saves with a .577 save percentage. She is tied for the team-high with 12 ground balls and had three caused turnovers.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 22 and April 5. On April 26, the field will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 10 and invited to the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 31.
