Washington D.C. – Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams completed the first day of the College Squash Association Individual Championships, competing for the men’s Molloy Cup and the women’s Holleran Cup, on Friday (March 2) at Squash on Fire in Washington D.C. Junior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.), freshman William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.), junior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior Carey Danforth (Greenwich, Conn.) advanced to tomorrow’s consolation semifinals after winning their second match of the day.

“A busy day of squash, played at the very highest level,” head coach Mark Allen said. “It’s tough competition here in D.C. with the top 80 ranked men and women battling it out, so there are no easy matches. Odrich, Braff, Bubrosky and Danforth have made it through to the consolation semifinals tomorrow and all four have a shot at making it through to Sunday’s final. Bubrosky, in particular, played well today beating Middlebury’s number one player Will Cembalest 3-0.”

In the consolation quarterfinals, Bubrosky topped William Cembalest from Middlebury, winning the match 11-5, 11-8, 11-7. Braff defeated New York University’s Gabriel Bassil 11-4, 11-9, 11-6, while Odrich won against Bates’ McLeod Abbott 11-6, 11-2, 11-3. All three advanced to tomorrow’s consolation semifinals.

In the women’s consolation quarterfinals, Danforth recorded the win against Kaitlin Reese from Haverford. She captured an 11-4, 11-2, 11-8 win in the match.

Sophomore Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) was the lone Cavalier to win her round of 16 match and advance to the quarterfinals. She defeated Bates’ Luca Polgar in five games with an 11-7, 0-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8 score before falling in the next round and being knocked out of the tournament by Cornell’s Marguax Losty with a score of 11-5, 11-3, 11-6.

The Cavaliers will continue competition tomorrow at Squash on Fire with matches beginning at 10 a.m.
