Washington D.C. – Virginia squash players senior Carey Danforth (Greenwich, Conn) and junior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) concluded competition at the College Squash Association Individual Championships on Sunday (March 4) at Squash on Fire in Washington D.C. Danforth lost, 5-0, in the consolation finals for the East draw of the Holleran Cup, while Bubrosky fell, 3-0, in the consolation finals for the East draw of the Molloy Cup.

In her last collegiate match, Danforth battled through five games against Lindsay Stanley from Pennsylvania. Danforth captured wins in games one and three, but suffered a 7-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 11-5 loss in the match.

“Carey played well today and came close to winning,” head coach Mark Allen said. “And this, her last match in a UVA uniform, was no different from any of the other 75 matches she has played, in that she gave her very best effort and applied herself to every single point. As a coach, you can’t ask more than that, and I’m very proud of her and thankful for all that she has given to UVA squash this past four years. She leaves a huge legacy and will be missed so much by her coaches and teammates.”

Bubrosky faced Trinity’s Aryaman Adik in the consolation finals, recording a three-game loss. Adik captured the match win with a score of 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.

“Grayson got taken out quickly today, by a very good shotmaker,” Allen said. “All credit to his opponent who didn’t miss a thing. If Grayson had had the chance to play with fresh legs, then things might have been more interesting, but he was definitely feeling the effects of two tough matches and was not covering the court nearly as well as he needed to have a chance to win. However, he played some great squash this weekend. His performance yesterday was at the next level up and I’m excited at the thought of him carrying that quality of play into next season’s matches. He’s also been a great representative of our team this weekend. He has played his heart out, and win or lose he always shows good sportsmanship and exemplary behavior.”

Prior to today’s competition, Danforth and Bubrosky both suffered a first-round loss in the tournament to move into the consolation bracket. Danforth recorded an 11-4, 11-2, 11-8 win against Haverford’s Kaitlin Reese in the consolation quarterfinals and an 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6 victory over Bates’ Victoria Arjoon in the consolation semifinals. Bubrusoky defeated Middlebury’s William Cembalest 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 in the consolation quarterfinals and Drexel’s Nathaniel Fry 11-8, 12-10, 11-13, 11-7 in the consolation semifinals.

The conclusion of the CSA Individual Championships marks the end of the inaugural varsity season for the Virginia squash program. The men’s team finished the year with a 15-8 record. The Cavaliers placed sixth in the Hoehn Cup and ranked 14th at the conclusion of the CSA Team National Championships.

The women’s team completed the season with a 14-9 overall record. Virginia competed in the Kurtz Cup in the CSA Team National Championships, finishing as consolation champions of the B-Division and earning a fifth-place finish in the cup. The finish ranked the Cavaliers at No. 13 in the CSA Team National Championships.
