Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Fueled by sophomore Andrew Orischak’s sparkling final round, the Virginia men’s golf team notched a third-place finish at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 10-under 278 on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 5-under 859. No. 8 Georgia Tech won the tournament at 848 while No. 2 Texas A&M was second at 853.

Orischak posted a bogey free round en route to a career-best scorer of 7-under 65. That tied as the lowest single-round score among the field during the two-day event. He birdied holes seven, eight and nine to finish the front nine at 4-under 32. He added three more birdies on the back side to vault into a tie for second place.

Orischak’s three-round total of 5-under 211 equaled his low tournament score. His runner-up showing was his best as a collegiate and was the third top-10 finish of his career. Orischak was outstanding on the par-five holes, leading the field by shooting 8-under on them during the tournament. His 15 total birdies also led the field.

Junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.), who led UVA after 36 holes, shot even par 72 and dropped back to 12th place at 2-under 214. Senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) finished 15th at 215 that included a final round score of 69.

Sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) placed 38th at 221. He shot 74 on Sunday while freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) was 59th at 226. He finished with a 72.

Freshman WeiWei Gao (Cebu City, Philippines) who competed as an individual, was 38th at 5-over 221. He shot 73 during the final round.

Virginia returns to action March 18 for the three-day Linger Longer Invitational in Eatonton, Ga.
