New London, N.C. – Virginia senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is tied for first place after the opening round of play at the 2018 ACC Men’s Golf Championships. Walker fired 7-under 65 at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. to share the first-round lead with Georgia Tech’s Luke Schniederjans.

Shooting 12-under 276, Georgia Tech holds a one stroke lead over Notre Dame in the race for the team title. Clemson is three strokes back in third place, while Wake Forest (-7), Florida State (-6), North Carolina (-5), Virginia (-4), NC State (-3) and Duke (-2) also shot under par on Friday.

Virginia, the No. 9 seed, finished Friday’s play in seventh place at 4-under 284. In addition to Walker’s play, junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) shot 5-under 67 and is tie for fourth place. Sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) is 43rd with a 75 and sophomore Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) is 51st after shooting 77. Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, N.C.) was UVA’s non-counter, placing 57th with a 78.

Starting on the 10th hole, Walker opened birdie, bogey, birdie and then collected an eagle on the par-four 389-yard 13th hole. He added a birdie on No. 18 to make his turn at 4-under par. Walker collected birdies on three of his first four holes on the front nine and then cruised in with five consecutive pars.

Round two of the 2018 ACC Men’s Golf Championship begins on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Saturday’s second round action will be available via ACC Network Extra beginning at 2 p.m.

The ACC Championships also signify the men’s golf matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. One point is at stake in the all-sports rivalry series between the two schools. Virginia Tech finished the first round of the ACC Championships in 12th place at 7-over 295.
