Walsh Jumps to Top of Leaderboard at ACCs

New London, N.C. – Virginia junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) shot 7-under 65 to bolt to the top of the leaderboard during the second round of play at the ACC Championships. Walsh enters Sunday’s final round at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. with a two-shot lead over teammate Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.), who led the event after the opening round. Walsh’s 36-hole total stands at 12-under 132 while Walker, a senior, posted a 69 on Saturday for a two-day total of 134.
North Carolina’s Ben Griffin and Clemson’s Doc Redman, the 2017 U.S. Amateur Champion, are tied for third place at 136, four shots behind Walsh.
Behind Walsh and Walkers’ stellar play, Virginia is tied for fourth place with Duke at 14-under 562. The Cavaliers finished the second round at 10-under 278. Fifth-ranked Georgia Tech leads the 12-team field at 23-under 553 while No. 15 Clemson and Notre Dame are tied for second place at 17-under 559.
Starting on the 10th tee, Walsh recorded birdies on holes 11, 15, 17 and 18. He posted an eagle on the par-5 first hole and then added another birdie on the fifth hole. His score matched is best 18-hole performance as a collegiate. He shot 65 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in the fall of 2016.
UVA freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) shot 3-under 69 during the second round to move up to 42nd place at 3-over 147. Sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) is 57th at 151 and sophomore Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) is 58th at 152.
The final round of the 2018 ACC Men’s Golf Championship begins Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. UVA will be paired with North Carolina and Duke. Those three teams will begin play off the first tee at 8:30 a.m. Sunday’s third-round action will be available via ACC Network Extra beginning at 1 p.m.
The ACC Championships also signify the men’s golf matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. One point is at stake in the all-sports rivalry series between the two schools. Virginia Tech finished the second round of the ACC Championships in 10th place at 2-over 578.
