Madison, Wisc. – Despite giving up several shots over its closing holes, the No. 31 Virginia women’s golf team remains near the top of the leaderboard at the NCAA Regional in Madison, Wisc. The Cavaliers shot 3-over 291 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 6-under 570. UVA is in second place behind No. 4 Duke. The Blue Devils lead the 18-team field at 14-under 562.

The top six teams from the NCAA’s four regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships. Each site features three rounds of play.

UVA heads into Wednesday’s final round seven strokes ahead of a trio of teams tied for sixth place at 1-over 577.

Junior Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Hoos during the second round by shooting 1-under 71. She moved up to 24th place overall at even par 144. Freshman Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) continues to top the team on the leaderboard. She shot 1-over 73 and enters the final round in fifth place at 4-under 140.

Junior Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) also posted a second-round score of 73. She finished the day in ninth place at 2-under 142. Junior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) dropped back to 30th place after shooting 75. Her two-day total stands at 1-over 145.

Sophomore Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was a counter for UVA during the second round, firing 2-over 74. She is in 70th place at 152.

For the most part, UVA stayed atop the leaderboard during its second round before hitting the University Ridge Golf Course’s final four holes. UVA was a 6-under par for the day before its four counting players combined to shoot 9-over par during that closing stretch.

UVA will tee off Wednesday’s final round starting at 9:39 a.m. from the No. 1 tee while paired with Duke and USC. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
