Norman, Okla. – The No. 46 Virginia men’s golf team is in 11th place after the opening round at the NCAA Regional in Norman, Okla. The Cavaliers shot 9-over 297 during the opening round. Oklahoma, playing on its home course, leads the 14-team field at 5-under 283.

The top-five teams from the three-round tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships. UVA finished the first day of play seven strokes behind fifth-place San Diego State (290).

Sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) led UVA on Monday by shooting 1-over 73. He finished the round in 21st place. Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) was one shot behind him in 28th place. Senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) are tied for 36th after shooting 3-over 75. Sophomore Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) shot 76 and is in 51st place.

UVA is paired with BYU and San Diego State on Tuesday. They will start their second rounds at 8:55 a.m. CT from the 10th tee. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
