Cavalier Men Add Four Student-Athletes to Fall Roster

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s squash team announced the addition of four student-athletes on Tuesday (May 15) as Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.), Patrick McElroy (Brookline, Mass.), Peter Miller (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Glenn Yates (Cape Town, South Africa) will join the program in the fall of 2018.
“Without a doubt, the incoming class for 2022 is our strongest yet,” head coach Mark Allen said. “Our three U.S. players, Miller, McElroy and Holey are currently ranked fifth, ninth and 15th (respectively) in the country and I anticipate all three of them challenging for places in the front half of the roster. Our international recruit, Glenn Yates, will be representing South Africa in this summer’s World Junior Championships in Chennai, India, and as a result, will arrive sharp and ready to play at the highest level.”
Holey is a two-time U.S. silver national champion and a three-time New England team champion. In 2016, he captured the New England Championship for the No. 7 position. With Brunswick High, Holey recorded two national team championships. He was a 2018 first-team All-New England honoree and two-time U.S. squash recipient of the William T. Ketcham Most-Improved Award. Over the course of his high school career, Holey posted a 49-8 record.
McElroy was named the 2016 U.S. National Junior U17 Boys Champion and was a 2016 and 2017 U.S. Squash All-American selection. In the Independent School League, McElroy earned a 2016 All-ISL selection and a 2015 team honorable mentions selection. In 2018, he aided his high school team, Noble and Greenough School, to an undefeated season and an ISL championship. McElroy was ranked No. 1 nationally at the U15 and U17 levels and was a 2017-18 Unanimous All-ISL honoree. McElroy competed at the 2017 Junior Pan American Games with the U.S. national team, earning a team bronze medal.
Miller played in back-to-back seasons with Team USA at the British Open and earned a top-five ranking in the U17 and U19 national squash rankings. During his high school career, he was named to both the first-team All Inter-Ac and first-team All-Mid Atlantic Squash Association three times. He capped his senior year as an All-American and was his school’s James A. O’Brien Plaque and Medal winner, given annually to the best squash player at Haverford School. Miller posted an undefeated season his junior year and helped lead Haverford to a national championship in 2017.
Yates was selected as a U19 Worlds South Africa National Squash Team member in 2016 and 2017 and was ranked in the U19 South Africa top-six national rankings both seasons. Yates won gold four consecutive years at the South Africa National Squash Championships, clinching the title from 2013-2016. He played No. 1 for Western Province from 2014-17 and was the Western Province 2017 Open Champion and 2017 Closed Champion. He won the 2016 Best League Performance award and the 2016 Most Promising Player award for the Western Province men’s squash league. Yates was also named a 2017 first-team Bishops rugby honoree and a first-team rugby squad honoree from 2015-17. He was a U15 national water polo champion in 2015 and an active member of the U14A, U15A and U16A team member, playing second and third team from 2013-2016.
“The 2017-18 team made huge strides this past season, moving up four places on the national rankings,” Allen said. “The strength of this year’s incoming class, coupled with the continued improvement of our returning players, leaves me to believe another jump of four spots is possible for the coming 2018-19 season. I can’t wait to get started.”
