Norman, Okla. – The No. 46 Virginia men’s golf team came up just short in its quest to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers finished the NCAA Regional in Norman, Okla., seventh, two places from receiving one of the site’s five berths to this year’s NCAA Championships.

Virginia shot 3-under 285 during Wednesday’s final round for a 54-hole total of 1-under 863. No. 10 Auburn and No. 15 Arkansas tied for fourth place, two strokes better than UVA’s total and one shot ahead of No. 22 Florida State.

Top-seed and third-ranked Oklahoma won the Regional on its home course, finishing at 14-under 850. No. 39 BYU and No. 27 North Florida tied for second at 13-under 851.

Junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.), the 2018 ACC Individual Champion, got red hot during the final round as the Hoos battled to qualify for the 30-team NCAA Championships. Walsh started the day in 43rd place after posting scores of 75 and 73 during the event’s first two rounds. He managed just five birdies over his first 36 holes but bettered that total during Wednesday’s play.

Walsh shot 6-under 66, posting seven birdies and one bogey. He finished the tournament tied for 12th at 2-under 214. His final round score tied as the third best 18-hole score of the three-day tournament.

UVA senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) also tied for 12th place with Walsh. Walker shot 71 during his final round as a collegiate player while Poole carded a 73.

Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) was 44th at 222 while sophomore Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was 50th at 224. Massie finished his round with a scorer of 76 while Orischak was one of UVA’s four counting players with a 74.
