SANTIAGO, Chile – Virginia field hockey goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) competed with the United States Women’s National Development Squad in a four-game test series against teams from Chile May 15-24 in Santiago, Chile.

Lucas was part of a goalkeeping group that did not allow a goal during the four-game tour. The American team picked up a 1-0 victory in the opener and also had 3-0 victories in the second and third matches. The two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the third match.

The U.S. Women’s National Development Squad accounts for the transitional phase between the U-21 USWNT and the senior USWNT. Many of the trial attendees recently completed their final college season and no longer are permitted to be on the junior team due to age restrictions. Some of the players might be invited for an extended trial with the USWNT in the upcoming months.

“I am pleased we created turnovers and took our opportunities today,” said Jun Kentwell, U.S. Women’s National Development Squad Head Coach. “Our players adapted well to a different challenge this morning against a young, physical and fast Chile team. We pressed well and regained the poise we had shown in game two. This has been a good learning experience for our team and I hope help prepare one or two players to take the next step to the Women’s National Team.”

Next, the U.S. Women’s National Development Squad athletes will compete at the Young Women’s National Championship taking place at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. from June 25-29.
