TAMPA, Fla.- Sophomore Andrenette Knight (Morant Bay, Jamaica) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles on Thursday (May 24) to open the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds for the Virginia women’s track and field team at the USF Track and Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Knight will compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships in tomorrow’s quarterfinals after placing second in her heat and eighth overall in the 400m hurdles. In today’s race, she recorded a career-best time of 57.57. The performance is the fourth fastest in UVA history.

Rounding out the day, freshman Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) finished 30th in the shot put, recording a mark of 15.32m (50’3.25″).

Junior Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) ran a time of 59.46 in the 400m hurdles, placing 31st in the event.

In the women’s long jump, redshirt junior Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) finished 35th with a mark of 5.81m (19’0.75″), while freshman Khyasia Caldwell-Adams (Pocono Summit, Pa.) recorded a jump of 5.80m (19’0.5″) to place 36th.

Junior Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) finished 36th in the 10000m run with a time of 36:29.24, while sophomore Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.) placed 39th in the 400m dash with a time of 54.03.

The NCAA East Preliminary Rounds serve as the qualifier for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The top-12 finishers from each event will advance to the national meet.

The Cavaliers will return tomorrow for the second day of the three-day competition. The meet will begin with the men’s discus at 8:45 a.m. and the women’s pole vault at 9:30 a.m.
