June 11, 2018
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Boston College pitcher Allyson Frei (Branchville, N.J.) has announced she will transfer to Virginia for her final season of eligibility. Frei graduated from Boston College in May and will be immediately eligible at Virginia.
“We are really excited to add Ally to our roster,” head coach Joanna Hardin said. “She comes from a quality program and will provide us with maturity and experience in the circle. Ally is bright, driven and a great student. Across the board she is a great fit for UVA and will help us make strides toward building the program.”
Over three seasons at Boston College, Frei owns a career ERA of 2.71 in 115 appearances. The right-hander made 80 starts in the circle and tossed 34 complete games as an Eagle. In 2018, she produced a career-best 2.53 ERA in 152 innings of work after redshirting in 2017 with an injury.
Nine of Frei’s complete games came this spring, including a two-hit shutout of national champion Florida State. The dominant performance was one of four shutouts on the season for Frei. She finished the season with 141 strikeouts to rank eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Frei is a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honoree, earning Third Team recognition as a freshman and Second Team laurels as a sophomore. Her 548 career strikeouts rank fourth in Boston College history, while her .229 career batting average against is third in the Eagles’ record book.
With the addition of Frei, Virginia will now add 11 new players to the fold for the 2019 season. Frei is one of three pitchers who will join the Cavaliers in the next campaign.
