June 20, 2018
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five members of the Virginia field hockey team have been selected to participate in the 2018 Young Women’s National Championship, being held at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa., from June 25-29.
Senior Nikki Freeman (Dowington, Pa.), juniors Erin Shanahan (Pasadena, Md.) and Colleen Norair (Fredericksburg, Va.), and sophomores Lauren Hausheer (West Windsor, N.J.) and Makayla Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa.) have all been selected to compete.
The YWNC is an annual event featuring the most elite female field hockey athletes in the country, including top collegiate and post-collegiate players. Over the spring, select athletes tried out and trained at USA Field Hockey Regional High Performance sites throughout the country for an opportunity to earn a roster position. These teams will face off for the prestigious title of national champions and for an opportunity to be selected to the U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team or U.S. Women’s National Development Squad.
Janneke Schopman, U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach and Director of Junior High Performance, selected the coaches for the YWNC. All high school graduates who are USA Field Hockey Members were eligible to try out for a chance to make a YWNC team. USA Field Hockey invites all field hockey enthusiasts to come watch these talented athletes compete.
A complete schedule of the tournament is available on the USA Field Hockey website.
