CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s lacrosse head coach Julie Myers announced fourth-years Sophie Alecce (Baltimore, Md.), Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) and Kaitlin Luzik (Alexandria, Va.) have been selected by the team as captains for the 2019 season.

“Our captains are voted on by the team and supported by our coaching staff,” Myers said. “This year we have a group of fourth-years that have contributed a lot to the program since arriving on Grounds. Maggie Jackson is a second-time team captain and is joined by Sophie Aleece and Kaitlin Luzik. All three captains are exceptional people, leaders and players. I am excited to work with them in their leadership role.”

Alecce was named to the All-ACC second team as a defender last season. She finished the season with 12 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Alecce recorded a career-high four caused turnovers in the win at Princeton. A steady defender for the past two seasons, she often draws the task of covering the opponent’s top players.

Jackson, who was named a captain as a third year, has made an impact since starting as a first year. An All-American, Jackson tied the UVA single-season record with 97 draw controls in 2018 and is now third all-time with 207 career draws. Jackson also ranks 10th all-time with 71 career assists after finishing with 32 goals and 32 assists last season. Jackson led the Cavaliers with 52 ground balls and was third with 21 caused turnovers.

Luzik stepped into the UVA starting lineup as a freshman and has made her impact on the defense. A two-time All-ACC selection, Luzik is just six caused turnovers away from moving into 10th all-time at UVA with 72 heading into the season. Luzik led the Cavaliers with 35 caused turnovers last season and was second with 46 ground balls.

The Cavaliers will continue fall scrimmages this weekend at home against High Point and Elon on Saturday, Oct. 13 beginning at 11 a.m. on Lower Turf.
