Virginia Wins Three Matches to Open Season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 12 Virginia women’s squash team (3-0) opened the season on Saturday (Nov. 10) at the McArthur Squash Center, defeating Richmond (1-2), Georgetown (6-3) and North Carolina (0-3) in 9-0 matches.
“Thanks to Richmond, North Carolina and Georgetown for joining us today for a busy opening day of squash on our brand new courts at McArthur Squash Center,” head coach Mark Allen said. “We were able to rotate our entire squad into the lineup and give everyone an opportunity to play, including our three first-years (Emma) Jinks, (Mandy) Haywood and (Caroline) Baldwin, who all came through their matches confidently without dropping a game. Everyone is looking forward to the match versus Princeton tomorrow, where the women will get the chance to test themselves against the number two team in the country.”
Virginia opened its season sweeping all three matches 9-0.
Junior Lois Lo (Hong Kong) and senior Candace Craig (Crozet, Va.) competed in all three matches as both players captured three wins. Additionally, seven Cavaliers concluded the day with wins in two matches.
Three Cavaliers earned their first win in a Virginia uniform. Freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Canada) played at the top of Virginia’s ladder, defeating Richmond’s Jessica Conway and North Carolina’s Reade Von Stade in 3-0 wins. Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) defeated Ros Mascarenhas from Richmond at the No. 3 position and Nina Thomas from Georgetown at the No. 2 position. Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) captured a win against Lexi Yakoobian from North Carolina at the No. 2 spot.
Virginia will return to action tomorrow to face No. 3 Princeton at the McArthur Squash Center at 12:30 p.m.
