Annapolis, Md.– The No. 14 Virginia men’s squash team (6-4) edged No. 19 Williams (8-7), 5-4, on Saturday (Jan. 19) in a neutral site match played at Navy’s Halsey International Squash Courts in Annapolis, Md.

“The men followed on from the women’s match, starting confidently and playing well to go 4-0 up,” said head coach Mark Allen. “But, then real credit goes to the Williams team and their coach Zafi Levy for showing great resolve and winning the next four matches, every one of them going to a fifth-game tiebreak. The match came down to the number one position and from 6-1 down in the fifth game, first-year Patrick (McElroy) played some inspirational squash to come back and win the final game 11-8 and give us the overall victory.”

The Cavaliers recorded a 4-0 start as junior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) and sophomore Andrew Braff captured three-set wins in positions four and six, respectively. Hansford defeated Jacob Bassil 11-5, 12-10, 11-4, while Braff topped Krish Bhavnani 11-9, 11-9, 13-11.

Freshman Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.) battled for a four-set win against Carl Shuck, winning the second position 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6. Senior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) topped David Pincus in position eight 11-7, 11-1, 9-11, 11-7, before freshman Patrick McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) captured an 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 4-11, 11-8 five-set victory against John Fitzgerald in the top spot.

Virginia will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 23) as the team hosts George Washington at the McArthur Squash Center.
