Virginia Sweeps Colby 9-0
Lancaster, Pa.- The No. 11 Virginia women’s squash team (9-5) opened the weekend on Friday (Jan. 25) with a 9-0 win against No. 23 Colby (3-9) at Franklin and Marshall’s Mayser Squash Courts in Lancaster, Pa.
The Cavaliers swept the Mules 3-0 in all nine positions as junior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) defeated Sydney Ku at the top of the ladder, 11-3, 11-4, 11-3.
Freshmen Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) and Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) recorded victories in positions two and three, respectively. Haywood defeated Julianna Song, 11-4, 11-6, 11-3, while Baldwin defeated Lily Wain, 11-6, 11-9, 11-5.
In position four, sophomore Emily Woodworth recorded an 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 win against Madeline Latimore, while senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) defeated Sabrina Teope 11-2, 11-0, 11-3 in position five and junior Julia Thompson (Newton Square, Pa.) defeated Stephanie Keane 11-3, 11-3, 11-1 in position six.
The Cavaliers closed the match with an 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 win from junior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) against D’Arcy Carlson in position seven, an 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 win from senior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) against Kathleen He in position eight and an 11-1, 11-3, 11-5 win from senior Candace Craig (Crozet, Va.) against Sarina Rabins in position nine.
Virginia will return to action tomorrow, facing No. 20 Franklin and Marshall (5-4) at its home facility at 10 a.m., before competing against No. 14 Middlebury (9-2) in a neutral site match at Lancaster Country Day School at 3 p.m.
