CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 14 Virginia men’s squash team (10-5) fell 9-0 to No. 7 Yale (8-3) on Sunday (Jan. 27) at the McArthur Squash Center.

Despite the loss, three Cavaliers forced their matches into extra games as junior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) battled through a 3-2 loss in position four. Hansford fell 7-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 to Calvin McCafferty. In position two, freshman Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.) forced an extra game in his 11-2, 13-11, 8-11, 11-6 loss to Nadav Raziel as senior Henry Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) fell 10-12, 11-3, 13-11, 11-8 to James Losty in position seven.

Senior Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) forced his second game into a tie break as he suffered a 11-7, 12-10, 11-9 loss to Yohan Pandole in position eight.

“The men were warriors this weekend and the two back-to-back 5-4 wins- played within three hours of each other (yesterday)- rank as one of the gutsiest performances I’ve ever had from a team I’ve coached,” head coach Mark Allen said. “Every single player played their part, and by the end of today’s match versus Yale we were running on fumes, but still fighting hard until the very last point was over. I couldn’t be prouder of the determination and resolve they have all shown. Special mention to fourth-year Henry Woodworth, who was only called into the lineup at the last minute yesterday, but won both his matches which proved to be crucial in both 5-4 victories.

“Also, thanks to assistant coaches Grant White and Moustafa Bayoumy who played a crucial role in drawing every last drop of energy from our players. The men get a couple of well-earned rest days now and then Wednesday we will begin our preparations for this weekend’s Mid-Atlantic team tournament, with our opening match versus MIT at home Friday night.”

Virginia will return to action on February 1 as the Cavaliers host the Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament.
