CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Cavalier men’s soccer student-athletes Robin Afamefuna (Wuerselen, Germany), Joe Bell (Wanaka, New Zealand) and Colin Shutler (Broadlands, Va.) were each listed on the ACC All-Academic team on Wednesday (Jan. 31).

Bell was honored for his academic prowess for the second time while Afamefuna and Shulter are first-time honorees. Bell, a United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-Region and Third Team All-ACC selection on the pitch, was included on last year’s All-Academic team as well as the league’s Academic Honor Roll.

Alongside Bell, Afamefuna serves as a team captain for the Cavaliers having played every minute of the 2018 season. A Global Studies major, Afamefuna was recognized for the first time after being included on last year’s ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Shutler, a Psychology major, played every minute of the regular season in goal for Virginia, posting the league’s second-lowest goals against average (0.70). He helped the Cavaliers record eight of the team’s nine shutouts, tied for the 16th most in NCAA Soccer.
Academic requirements for selection to the 35-member All-ACC Academic Team were a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season were also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
