No. 10 Virginia Edges No. 16 Franklin and Marshall, Wins Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 10 Virginia men’s squash team (14-5) edged No. 16 Franklin and Marshall (12-5) 5-4 on Sunday (Feb. 3) to win the Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament at the McArthur Squash Center.
“We had four matches this weekend, and three of them were 5-4 wins,” head coach Mark Allen said. “I think today was the ninth 5-4 match we have had this season, and that just goes to show how much grit and determination this team has. Now onwards to nationals, where the team has an opportunity to challenge for the Hoehn Cup.”
The Cavaliers dropped the first point to the Diplomats in position two, but sophomore Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) answered with a 6-11, 11-4, 11-6, 12-10 victory in position eight against Kingman Bassett.
Freshman Glenn Yates (Cape Town, South Africa) moved the Cavaliers ahead with an 11-5, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7 win over Boden Polikoff in position six as senior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) extended the team’s lead to 3-1, defeating Aryan Parekh who retired in the fifth game in position four.
Senior Henry Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) split a pair of Diplomat points, defeating Ricardo Machado 11-4, 11-9, 11-6 in position nine as the Franklin and Marshall captured wins in position seven and five, respectively.
Junior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) rallied for the win in position three after dropping his first game. Hansford defeated Silvio Soom 7-11, 11-6, 14-12, 11-4 to clinch the fifth point of the match in favor of the Cavaliers.
Virginia finished the tournament undefeated, topping MIT, George Washington and Franklin and Marshall 5-4, in addition to an 8-1 win against Dickinson.
Virginia will return to action next Saturday (Feb. 9) as the team hosts the Virginia Home Round Robin at the McArthur Squash Center.
