No. 9 Virginia Wins Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament, Defeats No. 15 George Washington
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 9 Virginia women’s squash team (14-6) won the Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 3) at the McArthur Squash Center after capturing a 7-2 victory against No. 15 George Washington (4-12).
The Cavaliers went undefeated in the round-robin tournament, which included Sunday’s win against the Colonials and a pair of 9-0 victories on Saturday against No. 20 Franklin and Marshall and No. 18 Dickinson.
“The women backed up last weekend’s success with another impressive display this one (week),” head coach Mark Allen said. “With each win they are growing in confidence and we hope to keep this momentum going through to nationals where they will have a real opportunity to challenge for the Kurtz Cup.”
Virginia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against the Colonials with wins from senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.), freshman Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) and junior Sarah Doss (Richmond Va.). Tyson defeated Anna Moscovici 11-2, 11-8, 11-3 in position eight, while Baldwin captured an 11-7, 11-9, 11-3 win against Arunachlam Vedikammeyamai in position four and Doss captured an 11-6, 11-3, 11-3 win against Aarushi Lakhotia in position six.
Sophomore Giovanna Veiga de Almeida went 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9 against Haley Hunt in position seven as freshman Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) clinched Virginia’s fifth point with a 13-11, 11-7, 13-15, 11-13, 17-15 victory in position two against Engy Elmandough.
Sophomore Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) recorded the team’s last point in the match, defeating Brooke Fieldman 11-2, 11-4, 11-1 in position five as the team won by default in position nine.
The Cavaliers will return home on Saturday (Feb. 9) to host the Virginia Home Round Robin.
