Four Cavaliers Named to Preseason All-ACC
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s lacrosse had four players selected to the Preseason All-ACC Teams, the conference office announced on Wednesday (Feb. 6).
Senior midfielder Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) and senior defender Kaitlin Luzik (Alexandria, Va.) were named to the Preseason All-ACC for the second consecutive year. Senior Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) and junior Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) were named to the At-Large team.
Jackson, an All-American, tied the a UVA single-season record with 97 draw controls in 2018. Jackson currently ranks third all-time with 207 career draws. She was second on the team with 64 points (32 goals, 32 assists) and led with 52 ground balls.
Luzik is a two-time All-ACC selection. The defender paced UVA with 35 caused turnovers and was second with 46 ground balls. She had a caused turnover in all but two games in 2018 and had three or more ground balls in 10 contests.
Shoemaker emerged as a scoring threat, finishing third last season with 51 goals. An All-ACC and All-Region selection, Shoemaker scored multiple goals in 16 games, with 10 of those being hat tricks. She also added 15 ground balls and 12 draw controls.
Mueller earned third team All-America honors as a sophomore after leading UVA with 74 points on 59 goals and 15 assists. Mueller’s 59 goals is tied for ninth all-time in a single season. Mueller also added 81 draw controls, 34 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers.
Virginia was selected to finish fourth in the ACC Preseason Poll, behind No. 1 Boston College, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 3 Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers enter the season ranked No. 16 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
UVA opens the season on Saturday, Feb. 9, as it hosts No. 13 Navy at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
