NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 9 Virginia men’s squash team (16-7) finished fourth at the Hoehn Cup, the B Division of the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships, on Sunday (Feb. 17), after falling 7-2 to No. 11 St. Lawrence (7-8) in the third-place match at the Brady Squash Center.

The Cavaliers recorded wins in two positions as sophomore Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) won in position nine and sophomore Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) won in position eight.

“Tough to lose our last two matches of the season, but this takes nothing away from how pleased I am with all that this team has accomplished,” head coach Mark Allen said. “Our final ranking will be 12 and that’s two spots up from 2017-18. Getting our first ever wins over Princeton and then George Washington, and winning the inaugural Mid-Atlantic team championships were some of the highlights. I’d like to say thank you to our five seniors who have been the backbone of this squad for their entire four years at UVA. Grayson (Bubrosky), Henry (Woodworth), James (Dudzik), Jarett (Odrich) and Killian (Bubrosky) just played their last weekend of college squash and it’s truly been an honor to coach these fine young men and see them develop both on and off of the court.”

The Cavaliers opened with a 2-1 lead as Katz recorded the first point of the day with an 12-10, 11-5, 11-5 win against Aran Thawani in position nine.

The Saints followed with a three-game win in position three as Braff clinched the victory in position eight, defeating Derek Ng 11-4, 11-8, 11-7.

Freshman Glenn Yates (Cape Town, South Africa) battled to a 7-11, 11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9 five-game loss against Youssef Frikry in position six, while St. Lawrence recorded the lead for the first time with an 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 win in position two from Karim Ibrahim against Virginia’s Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.).

The Cavaliers would fall in positions one and seven, respectively, as St. Lawrence captured the fifth point of the match, clinching the win. Freshman Patrick McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) lost 11-7, 11-9, 11-4 to Mohamed El Gawarhy in position one, while senior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) dropped a hard-fought 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9 match to Kareem Elrayes in position seven.

The loss concludes the season for the Cavaliers as members of the team await selection for the CSA Individual Championships (March 1-3) in Providence, R.I.
