No. 10 Virginia Falls in Kurtz Cup Semifinal Match to No. 11 Cornell
HARTFORD, Conn.- The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (17-7) fell 6-3 to No. 11 Cornell (7-10) on Saturday (Feb. 23) in the semifinals at the Kurtz Cup, the B Division of the College Squash Association Team Championships, at Kellner Squash Center.
Senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) and junior Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) opened the match with hard fought five-game wins in position six and nine, respectively. Tyson rallied for a 6-11, 10-12, 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 come-from-behind victory against Mimi Delisser as Thompson went 9-11, 11-7, 11-2, 8-11, 11-9 against Lauren Leizman.
Cornell, however, responded with back-to-back wins in position three and two, respectively. Sophomore Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) dropped 7-11, 12-10, 11-7, 18-16 to Nghi Nguyen in position three, while freshman Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) fell 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 to Lily Zelov in position two.
The Big Red added an 11-5, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory from Colby Gallagher in position five against freshman Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.), before clinching the match with an 11-7, 6-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6 win from Hannah Scherl in position eight against sophomore Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and an 11-7, 11-8, 11-3 win from Sivasangari Subramaniam in position one against freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edward Island).
Junior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) recorded an 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 win in the last match of the night, topping Lucy Martin in position seven 11-7, 11-6, 11-6.
Virginia will return to action tomorrow to compete in the third-place match against No. 12 Brown (9-8) at 10:30 a.m.
