Aiken, S.C. – The Virginia men’s golf team could not make up any ground on a red hot South Carolina team and finished the Palmetto Intercollegiate second in an 18-team field. UVA shot 14-over 294 during Tuesdays’ final round for a 54-hole total of 8-over 843. The Gamecocks ran away with the team trophy with a score of 27-under 813.

UVA managed to place three golfers among the top 15 players on the leaderboard. Leading that group was sophomore Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) who finished seventh at 1-under 209. He shot 3-over 73 during the final round.

Massie’s finish was the second top-10 performance of his career. The other also came at last year’s Palmetto Intercollegiate when he also posted a career-best score of 209. Massie’s second-round score of 5-under 65 was the best 18-hole total of his career.

Senior All-American Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) recorded the 13th top-10 finish of his career, placing 10th at 1-over 211. He shot 4-over 74 on Tuesday.

Junior Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) matched Massie’s 73 as the team’s low score for the day. He completed the tournament in 15th place at 4-over 214. Freshman David Morgan (Naples, Fla.) was 21st at 216. That was his low collegiate tournament score and finish. Senior Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) was 29th at 220. He finished with a final-round score of 77.

South Carolina’s Will Miles took medalist honors at 13-under 197.
