Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 17 Virginia women’s golf team defeated No. 40 Old Dominion in match-play format tournament Friday at Spring Creek Golf Club. The Cavaliers won the event 3 to 2.

Each individual winner from the five head-to-head competitions received one point for winning their match.

Seniors Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) and Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) and junior Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) all picked up wins for the Cavaliers. ODU’s two points came from victories by Leah Onosato against UVA freshman Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) and Charlotte de Corte defeated Cavalier sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.)

“We told the team today that win or lose, we wanted them to learn something today – whether that thing is about their own games, or how to compete in match play,” said UVA coach Ria Scott. “Old Dominion is a really solid and very hungry team and we knew that today was going to be a challenge. Spring Creek is such a great venue for match play. It’s truly the kind of golf course that can prepare any team well for NCAA Regionals.”

Virginia added the match to its schedule after having a date available following the cancellation of a round at the Clemson Invitational in April due to inclement weather.

UVA returns to action May 6-8 at the NCAA Regional site at Auburn. The Cavaliers are the No. 5 seed in the tournament to be held at the Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala.
