SOUTH BEND, IND. – Former Cavalier Derek Casey threw seven perfect innings in a combined no-hitter for the South Bend Cubs (Single-A) on Monday night (May 6). It marked the second no-hitter in South Bend Cubs history.

Casey retired all 21 batters he faced and struck out six batters to earn his first Midwest League win. Casey, a ninth-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2018 MLB Draft, has thrown 11-straight shutout innings for the South Bend Cubs. 

Serving as the team’s Friday night starter for the Cavaliers last season, Casey earned Third Team All-ACC honors after posting a 7-4 record with a staff-low, 3.48 ERA in 14 starts. He fanned a career-high 106 batters in 2018, tied for 6th most in the ACC, in 95.2 innings pitched. Over the course of his four-year career at UVA, he logged 199.1 innings and went 16-7 with a 3.52 ERA and 191 strikeouts.
