FINAL RESULTS

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight rowed to a sixth-place finish as the No. 10 Cavaliers finished 10th in the team standings at the NCAA Championships Sunday (June 2) at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.
 
Washington won the event with 132 points, sweeping all three grand finals for the second time in the last three NCAA championship regattas. Texas (125), Michigan (119), Stanford (116), Ohio State (105) and California (103) completed the top-6. Princeton (94), Yale (83), Brown (79) and Virginia completed the top-10.
 
“We finished 10th, we came in ranked 10th as a team coming into the championship, so we did what we were ranked,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We were hopeful we could do a little more than that, but the competition here is incredibly tough. Our kids raced hard and really well, we’re just 10th in the country.”
 
UVA’s Second Varsity Eight placed sixth in the grand final with a time of 6:26.567. Washington won the race at 6:11.262, followed by Texas (6:12.328), Michigan (6:15.063), Stanford (6:16.937), Ohio State (6:20.449) and the Cavaliers.
 
Members of the 2V8 include coxswain Colette Glass (Tampa, Fla.), Star Davidson (Canterbury, N.Z.), Isabella Strickler (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), Ally Terblanche (Johannesburg, South Africa), Georgia Gray (Seattle, Wash.), Sophie Pennoyer (Hartford, Conn.), Mackenzie King (Yardley, Pa.), To Wiersma (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Tessa Otting (Evanston, Ill.).
 
In the Varsity Eight petite final, the Cavaliers finished sixth (12th overall) with a time of 6:18.908. Princeton won the race at 6:11.529, followed by Yale (6:14.337), Iowa (6:15.619), Rutgers (6:16.509), Brown (6:16.550) and the Cavaliers.
 
The Varsity Four placed seventh (13th overall) in the petite final, which was won by Princeton (7:03.634). Brown (7:06.083) finished second, followed by Indiana (7:08.084), Rutgers (7:08.564), Yale (7:09.636), Duke (7:10.592) and Virginia.
 
The NCAA Rowing Championships marked the final collegiate regatta for UVA seniors Izzi Weiss (Chicago, Ill.), Heidi Long (Buckinghamshire, England), Anna Fairs (Thorpe Thewles, England), Alex Slabbert (Cos Cob, Conn.), Gray, King and Pennoyer.
 
“We aspire to be higher than that (10th) and we’ll work really hard to be higher than that next year,” Sauer added. “Our seniors are leaving a legacy of hard work and good people. The good people part is the most important.”
