Morris Shares Top VaSID Honor; Four Cavaliers Recognized
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Shortstop Tanner Morris (Crozet, Va.) was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors co-Player of the Year on Tuesday (July 9). It marked the third time in four years a Cavalier has taken home the organization’s top honor.
Morris also received First Team All-State honors along with double play partner Nic Kent (Charlottesville, Va.). Freshman Zack Gelof (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) and sophomore Brendan Rivoli (Douglassville, Pa.) were listed on the Second Team.
Morris, a fifth-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2019 MLB Draft, led the Cavaliers in nearly all offensive categories. Morris garnered Third Team All-ACC accolades after earning All-Freshman team honors last season. The left-handed hitting shortstop played every game, posting team bests in batting average (.345), hits (77) doubles (21), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.507), walks (41) and on-base percentage (.452). His 21 doubles were tied for the sixth most in a single season in program history.
Kent added another award to his growing list that includes Freshman All-America honors from D1Baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, First Team ABCA All-Atlantic Region and First Team All-ACC honors. The first year second baseman batted .337, the second highest average on the club while leading the team with 17 stolen bases and three triples. He compiled 68 hits, nine doubles and hit three home runs.
Gelof played all 56 games as a true freshman and batted .313 with 13 doubles, two home runs and 32 RBI. In his collegiate debut he tied the program’s single-game record for doubles in a game with three in a 4-for-4, four-RBI effort against eventual National Champion Vanderbilt. He reached base in his first 28 games of the year that included a 17-game hit streak, the longest by a UVA freshman since 2000. He swiped 16 bases, good for the second-most on the club.
Rivoli co-led the Cavaliers in home runs (5) and RBI (42) while sporting a .320 average in 51 games played. The sophomore recorded 21 multi-hit games and six contests in which he drove in three or more runs. At James Madison on April 9th, he homered twice in a four-RBI day and a 9-3 Virginia victory.
