Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia women’s golf team opens the season Monday at the sixth annual ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Lake Elmo, Minn., at the Royal Golf Club. The tournament features one of the top fields of any fall tournament including 2019 NCAA Champion Duke, runner-up Wake Forest and four other teams ranked in Golfweek’s preseason top-10.
 
The 12-team field includes (Golfweek preseason poll ranking) – USC (1), Duke (2), Texas (4), UCLA (5), Wake Forest (9), Arizona State (10) South Carolina (11) and Arizona (14), Arkansas, Alabama and Minnesota.
 
Teams will play 18 holes each day through Wednesday with tee times starting at 9:30 a.m.
 
This is UVA’s second appearance in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. The Cavaliers finished 11th in the event in 2016. The tournament is named for Annika Sorenstam, who amassed 89 professional victories, including 72 on the LPGA tour and 10 Major championships. She was the Rolex player of the year eight times.
 
Second-year coach Ria Scott’s lineup includes three players making their collegiate debut. UVA junior Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) and sophomore Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) return from the Cavalier lineup that finished 14th at last year’s NCAA Championships. They will be joined by freshmen Virginia Bossi (Como, Italy) and Celeste Valinho (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore Haeley Wotnosky (Wake Forest, N.C.). Wotnosky did not play in any tournaments during her first year as a Cavalier.
