CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team (5-1, 0-0 ACC) plays at No. 19 Syracuse (5-1, 0-0 ACC) on Friday (Sept. 20) at 4:30 p.m., in Syracuse, N.Y.

  • Friday’s game will the Virginia field hockey team’s first televised contest on the ACC Network

Noting the Cavaliers

  • This is the ACC opener for both teams
  • Head coach Michele Madison comes into the game with a 399-240-8 career record as a head coach. She is one win away from becoming the ninth NCAA Division I coach to tally 400 career wins
  • Junior striker Makayla Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa.) leads the team in goals (5) and points (10)
  • Gallen has two multi-goal games and has scored two game-winners this season
  • Gallen’s five goals are already more than any single player on the team scored last season
  • Senior back Anzel Viljoen (Matamata, New Zealand) leads the team with five assists. Viljoen has been the penalty corner injector for most of the season. She has 15 assists in her career and 35 career points
  • Viljoen is third in the ACC and 12th in the nation with 0.83 assists per game

 
ACC Defensive Player of the Week

  • Redshirt sophomore goalie Lauren Hausheer (West Windsor, N.J.) was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week
  • Hausheer made a career high eight saves in goal as the No. 6 Cavaliers pushed No. 4 Maryland through double-overtime on the road before coming up on the short end of a shootout on Friday. For the second week in a row, she made a save on a stroke attempt, this one coming during the second overtime period. Hausheer added two saves – both in the fourth quarter – as Virginia blanked Yale by a 3-0 score on Sunday
  • This is the first player of the week honor for Hausheer in her career and the first time this season a Cavalier has earned the conference’s weekly accolade
  • Hausheer leads the ACC in save percentage (.839) and saves-per-game (4.33). She ranks sixth in the nation in save percentage. She has a career save percentage of .882 

Rankings

  • The Cavaliers moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week’s NFHCA rankings
  • The Cavaliers started the season ranked No. 11
  • Virginia has been ranked in the top-25 every single week since the 2012 preseason poll
  • The game against Syracuse is UVA’s fourth time playing a ranked opponent this season. Old Dominion was unranked when UVA faced them on opening weekend, but are No. 22 in this week’s poll 

Scouting Syracuse

  • Syracuse is ranked No. 19 in this week’s NFHCA poll
  • The Orange are 5-1 this season with one victory over a ranked opponent, a 2-1 overtime win against Saint Joseph’s
  • Syracuse has had three games go into overtime. All but one of their games this season have been decided by one goal
  • Freshman forward Charlotte De Vries leads the team with six goals and 13 point. No other player on the team has scored more than two goals or accumulated more than five points
  • Virginia is 6-3 all-time against Syracuse and has won the last three meetings, including a 2-1 double overtime victory last season in Charlottesville 

On the Horizon

  • Virginia will have the remainder of the weekend off before hosting James Madison in a special mid-week match on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
  • UVA will close out that homestand by hosting defending-national-champion North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. The UNC game will air on the ACC Regional Sports Networks
