No. 10 Virginia Tops No. 15 George Washington, Wins Washington-Jefferson Cup
WASHINGTON – The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (3-0) captured an 8-1 victory to defeat No. 15 George Washington (1-2) at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts on Tuesday (Nov. 19). With the win, Virginia clinched the Washington-Jefferson Cup for the second consecutive year.
The Washington-Jefferson Cup is an annual rivalry between the Cavaliers and Colonials that was established during the 2016-17 season and includes postdated winners through the 2013-14 season. The winner is determined by a cumulative score for both the men’s and women’s matches. The men’s team captured a 7-2 victory against the Colonials on Friday (Nov. 15).
Senior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) opened the match with a 11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6 win over Aarushi Lakhotia in position eight as senior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) followed with a 11-3, 10-12, 11-8, 11-4 win against Nikki Pang in position six.
Senior Lois Lo (Hong Kong) and freshman Maria Paula Moya (Ambato, Ecuador) recorded back-to-back wins with Lo going 4-11, 15-13, 11-9, 13-11 against Aairya Patel in position nine, while Moya defeated Engy Elmandouh 11-7, 12-10, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8 in position four.
Junior Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) clinched the match for the Cavaliers, defeating Sasha Hinckley 3-0. Almeida recorded a score of 11-3, 11-1, 11-4 in position seven for the deciding point.
Virginia continued to capture points with wins from sophomore Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados), junior Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) and freshman Sydney Maxwell (Toronto, Ontario). Haywood defeated Zuha Nazir 11-3, 5-11, 11-8, 11-3 in position four as Woodworth topped Vedika Arunachalam 11-6, 11-7, 12-10 in position five. Maxwell recorded a 11-6, 11-9, 11-8 victory against Emma Tryon in position three.
The UVA women’s team will return to action on Friday to face No. 3 Princeton (1-0) in Princeton, N.J.
