No. 10 Virginia Defeats No. 19 Tufts 9-0
MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (11-5) swept the No. 19 Tufts (6-7) on Sunday (Feb. 2) at the Jumbos’ newly opened Tufts Squash Center.
Virginia won all nine positions as freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) defeated Claire Davidson 11-4, 11-6, 11-5 in position one and sophomore Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) recorded a score of 5-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7 against Isa Schneider in position two.
Freshman Maria Paula Moya (Ambato, Ecuador) went 11-6, 11-9, 11-2 against Catherine Shanahan in position three, freshman Sydney Maxwell (Toronto, Ontario) went 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6 against Megan Chen in position four and freshman Julia Curran (Bronxville, N.Y.) went 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 against Diya Sanghi in position five.
Seniors Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.), Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) and Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) captured wins in positions six, seven and eight, respectively. Thompson went 3-0 against Chole Kantor, winning the matchup 11-5, 11-5, 11-4. Doss defeated Rachel Windreich 11-5, 11-7, 11-3, while Arya defeated Natalie Bartlett with a score of 11-7, 11-5, 11-4. Sophomore Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) rounded out the match with a 13-11, 11-4, 11-2 win against Radika Joshi in position nine.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Feb. 7 as the team travels to Washington to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Championships.
Match Notes:
• Virginia won its third consecutive match over a ranked opponent.
• The match was the team’s eighth-straight against a team ranked inside the top-20 nationally.
• Virginia swept its sixth match this season.
• The Cavaliers are now 1-0 all-time against the Tufts.
