No. 10 Virginia Sweeps No. 18 Franklin & Marshall at Mid-Atlantic Squash Championships
WASHINGTON – The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (12-5) captured a 9-0 win against No. 18 Franklin & Marshall (8-7) at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts on Friday (Feb. 7) to open the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Squash Championships.
Sophomore Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) went 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 against Audrey Berling in position one while sophomore Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) battled back after dropping the first two games to Emily Knapp to clinch position two with a 5-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 score. Senior Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) battled Emily Bartos to a 11-5, 11-2, 11-5 victory in position three to round out the top of the ladder.
Freshmen Julia Curran (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Grace Seymour (Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.) captured wins in position four and five, respectively. Curran defeated Katherine Galambos 11-4, 11-3, 11-7, while Seymour topped Samira Sankaran 11-2, 11-5, 11-3.
Senior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) recorded an 11-7, 11-6, 11-3 win in position six against Pratiksha Mishra, while sophomore Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) recorded an 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 win against Zoe Quayle in position seven and senior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) recorded an 11-6, 11-2, 11-2 win against Grace Smith in position eight.
Junior Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) went 11-0, 11-0, 11-2 in position nine against Grace Smith to round out the day.
The Cavaliers will face George Washington and Dickinson tomorrow in the round robin tournament. Virginia will compete against the No. 14 Colonials at 9:45 a.m. at Squash on Fire, while the team’s match against the No. 23 Red Devils is at 6 p.m. at Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts.

• Virginia has played nine consecutive matches against a ranked opponent.
• The Cavaliers are 5-0 against Franklin & Marshall since becoming a varsity team.
• The 9-0 win was the fourth consecutive sweep for the Cavaliers against the Diplomats.
