PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams concluded the opening day of the College Squash Association (CSA) Individual Championships at Pennsylvania’s Penn Squash Center on Friday (March 6) with two Cavaliers recording wins in their opening matches and three more advancing to consolation semifinals.
 
Freshman Aly Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) cruised to a 3-0 win in his Round of 16 match in the Pool bracket, the A division of the men’s national championships. Hussein defeated Samuel Scherl of Harvard 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 to advance to the national championship quarterfinals. The Virginia freshman would battle through four games but suffered an 11-8, 14-16, 11-6, 11-8 loss to Harvard’s Marwan Tarek.
 
Fighting through a five-game opener, sophomore Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) went 11-4, 10-12, 17-15, 5-11, 15-13 to defeat Audrey Berling from Franklin and Marshall in the Holleran Cup West Round of 16. She faced Emma Leonard from Princeton in the quarterfinals where she fell in an 11-5, 11-1, 11-5 decision.
 
Additionally, three Cavaliers picked up wins in the consolation bracket to advance to tomorrow’s consolation semifinals.
 
Sophomore Sydney Maxwell (Toronto, Ontario) rebounded with a win in the Holleran South consolation quarterfinals after dropping her Round of 16 match 11-9, 11-8, 12-14, 11-7 to Haley Jefferson of Williams. She defeated Hamilton’s Hope Worcester 11-4, 11-1, 11-4 to earn a spot in tomorrow’s consolation semifinal match.
 
Junior Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) fell 10-12, 11-8, 10-12, 11-4, 11-7 to Ciara Richards of Drexel in the Round of 16 to move her in to the Holleran Cup East consolation quarterfinals where she would face senior teammate Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.). De Almeida recorded a 7-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-2, 11-9 win in the consolation quarterfinals.
 
Freshman Omar El Torkey (New Cairo, Egypt) advanced to the consolation semifinals of the Pool division, winning his consolation quarterfinal match by a forfeit. He fell 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5 to Marwan Tarek from Harvard in his first match of the day.
 
Maxwell will compete against Marcela Marquez from William Smith at 11:05 a.m. in the consolation semifinals of the Holleran South. De Almeida will face Claire Davidson from Tufts in the consolation semifinals of the Holleran East. The two will compete at 11:55 a.m. El Torkey will play in the Pool consolation semifinals tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Victor Crouin of Harvard.
